Minds On
By Mrs. Jacob's TA
6th Grade Journalism with Mrs. Hugunin at Smith Centers Courthouse
At Minds On we did a whole lot of stuff! First we partnered up with someone that was not from our school and learned stuff about them and then we went to the Library to look for a topic for the Minds On Gazette. I chose comics, Ashley Freeman chose monkeys, Ellace Henderson chose games and a girl from another school named Teah, chose horses and I think you get the Idea. Next we got out the encyclopedias and looked for info on our topics. We also looked for pictures in the newspaper that interested us. It was a lot of fun!! We ate Hamburgers for lunch and brownies and chips. The kids that came are Kian Stegmeier, Bailey Moore, Ashley Freemen, Ellace Henderson, and of coarse…ME!! Hannah Pugh. We partnered up again to talk about our topic and why we chose it. One kid chose 62 topics! His name is Joseph. I even made a new friend. Her name is Cora. She is very nice. Minds On was great!!

8th Grade Journalism with Mrs. Link at Smith Centers Library
The focus this year for the writing workshops was journalistic writing. They did activities to introduce new vocabulary, scavenger hunts to familiarize students with the various sections of a newspaper, and opportunities to create various journalistic writing projects. These projects will be used in a “Minds On Gazette”. The students who attended are Mariah Coomes, Kassidy Roth, Bryan Lenker, and Justin Turner.

8th Grade Math with Mrs. Johnson at Red Cloud Opera House
The students worked on working backward and forward with new management skills, and focus on the outcomes of their problem solving. Some of their projects included building a cathedral and designing burger boxes and fries bags. The need to use exact calculations was emphasized rather than estimations. Those attending were Hunter Kohler, Michael Dusin, William Still, Mattison Dusin, George Klink, Clayton Sauer, Lane Chestnut, Beth Schurz, Jonah Smith, Destiny Gretzschel, and Tristan McCallister.
8th Grade Science with Mr. Beckman at Huck Boyd Center
The
science students were challenged to look closer at DNA and DNA
technology. They were able to isolate banana DNA and find out
how the “stuff” on CSI is really done. Students were able to
use hi-tech equipment including an electrophoresis and see
how it solves the “mystery”. They were able to leave with a
sample of DNA to share when they returned. The
students who attended were Stephen Sage, Mackenzie Lumpkin, Wade
Kennedy, and Amy Stapel.
